Giovanna Castellano

Giovanna Castellano is a Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Bari Aldo Moro, where she coordinates the Computational Intelligence Laboratory (CILab). Her research spans Computational Intelligence, Computer Vision and Deep Learning, with a long-standing interest in fuzzy systems, interpretable models and Explainable Artificial Intelligence.

Her work combines methodological research with applications to complex domains, including healthcare, visual data analysis and intelligent decision-support systems.

She coordinates the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at the University of Bari Aldo Moro and has led research activities in national projects, including NEED — Next-Gen Digital Diagnostics: Bridging AI Explainability and Medical Trust and FAIR — Future Artificial Intelligence Research, where she was PI of WP6.4 on the understandability of AI systems.
